Site Analysis Framework

1. Record the basis

Note location, visit date, drawing scale, information sources and limits of access. Distinguish measured information from observations and assumptions.

2. Read the context

Map neighbouring uses, building edges, important views, noise sources and public spaces. Photograph from marked positions and annotate what each image explains.

3. Map access and movement

Show pedestrian, vehicle, service and emergency approaches for review. Record arrival points, level changes, conflicts and the relationship to public transport.

4. Observe climate and ground

Record orientation, sun exposure, shade, wind observations, vegetation, drainage and visible ground conditions. Flag matters requiring measured surveys or specialist advice.

5. Turn evidence into decisions

Prepare three diagrams: constraints, opportunities and a provisional response. For each proposed design move, name the evidence supporting it and one question still to resolve.

Review output

A context map, annotated photographs, movement diagram, climate diagram and a concise opportunities-and-constraints summary. Use this online guide alongside your own site notes.
