Planning a Healing Environment
Understand the journeys
A healthcare environment serves patients, families, clinical staff and support teams. Begin by mapping their journeys and speaking with the people who operate the facility. Clinical workflows and specialist requirements must shape the brief.
Make arrival and movement legible
Study the route from the entrance to reception, waiting and consultation. Consider what a first-time visitor can see and understand at each decision point. Separate routes where the operational brief requires it, and review them with the relevant teams.
Balance openness and privacy
Waiting, consultation and recovery spaces have different needs. Test sightlines, acoustic privacy, daylight and places for families to pause. Landscape and views can contribute to the experience, but their design must also consider accessibility, upkeep and clinical requirements.
Evaluate with the team
Walk through typical and demanding scenarios with clinicians, operators and specialist consultants. Record where the plan creates uncertainty or conflicts. Review the Cancer Hospital Campus case study as a project example, while developing each facility around its own users, programme and operational requirements.
